A STUDY TO ANALYSE SATISFACTION OF TEACHERS AMONG INDIAN UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES

Teachers are the pillars of the society, who help students to grow to shoulder the responsibility of taking their nation ahead of others. They desire security, recognition, new experience and independence. When these needs are not fulfilled they become tense. Dissatisfaction among workers is undesirable and dangerous in any profession; it is suicidal if it occurs in teaching profession. If factors responsible for dissatisfaction can be differentiated, attempts can be made either to change those conditions or to reduce their intensity so as to increase the holding power of the profession. This study attempts to find out which facet or dimension affects the job satisfaction of university teachers the most. The present study takes into account intrinsic and extrinsic factors to find out the level of job satisfaction and to see the effect of age, gender, marital status, education, occupation level and length of employment on the job satisfaction of academicians. Paper also aims to focus on the influential factors contributing to the satisfaction and dissatisfaction of the university and college teachers of India. Based on a survey, it attempts to gain insights into the job satisfaction levels from the perspective of the college teachers. A structured questionnaire was developed having 9 facets of job satisfaction which is addressed through 31 statements to which the respondents is asked to react using a five –step Likert scale ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree.
A comparative study on the university and college teachers reflects similarity and dissimilarities of the two groups in some of the factors. Among 33 considered hypotheses, 6 are accepted. It has been found that there are significant differences between university and college teachers regarding job satisfaction. University teachers show higher overall job satisfaction compared to college teachers because of the positive factors like authorities, communication, reward system and HR policy. Analysis also reveals that university teachers are enjoying modern classroom equipments and technological facilities than college teachers. It has been come out as a significant factor for their overall job satisfaction. Analysis shows no gender disparity exists among their responses. This suggests us how to handle the dissatisfaction of the college teachers.
